The gallbladder has liquid called bile which helps in the digestion process. This bile is made of fats, salts, water, cholesterol, proteins and bilirubin and is stored in the gallbladder for the body to use when required. When this liquid bile contains too much of substance like bile salt or bilirubin, it hardens into piece of stone like substance also called gallstones. There are two types of stones found in the gallbladder namely: cholesterol and pigment stones. Pigment stones are made of bilirubin and are dark in color whereas cholesterol stones are normally yellow-green in color and mainly contain cholesterol. The cholesterol type is the most common stone found in gallbladders. These stones can cause blockage and stop the flow of bile which in turn can cause inflammation in the gallbladder. Individuals with a family history of gallstones, those who are obese, aged, diabetic are more at risk. Also, this condition is more common in women than in men. The diet of a person can also put a person at a risk of developing these stones.
